Conrad Weiser players and coaches admitted that allowing a goal in the opening minutes of their PIAA Field Hockey Tournament opener was a wakeup call.
Imagine how alarmed Brandywine Heights coach Donna Hordendorf and her players were to find themselves in a quick three-goal deficit.

The Bullets battled back Tuesday to stun Villa Maria 4-3 and set the stage for a Berks County sweep in a Class AA tripleheader at Exeter's Don Thomas Stadium.

Conrad Weiser rallied to defeat Moravian Academy 3-2 and Hamburg got a goal with just less than four minutes left to defeat Midd-West 1-0.

The victories send the Berks trio to the quarterfinals Saturday, times and sites to be determined.

Brandywine (23-2-1) will face undefeated District 2 champion Wyoming Seminary, Conrad Weiser (20-5-1) will play unbeaten District 4 champion Selinsgrove and Hamburg (19-6) will play District 6 champion Indian Valley.

The first 6:16 of the tripleheader looked as if it would be anything but a dominating day by Berks schools. Villa Maria (18-4-1) jumped on the Bullets for three quick goals.

"We were shocked," Brandywine senior Amy Hordendorf said. "That never happened to us before."

But the Bullets didn't panic. After Maria Malonoski scored with 23:44 left in the first half to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead, it took just 32 seconds for the Bullets to answer with the first of Corinne Koiro's two goals off an assist from Amy Hordendorf.

"After that first goal I felt like we could keep scoring," Amy Hordendorf said. "Once we got the offense going I thought we could do it."

The Bullets, who rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat West Perry in Saturday's District 3-AA third-place game, battled all the way back by halftime.

Koiro scored her second goal with 12:04 left and Hordendorf tied it with no time left off an untimed penalty corner.

Hordendorf scored the only goal of the second half 11 minutes in with a blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner.

"A lot of it's nerves," Donna Hordendorf said about falling behind early. "They just have to settle down and play their game. Once they started to do that, they realized they could play hard."

The District 3 champion Scouts got a pair of goals from Darrah Rachman and one from Kelsey Pachuilo to overcome the District 11 runner-up Lions (19-6).

Moravian took a 1-0 lead when Caity Davies scored the first of her two goals just 3:13 into the game.

"It was kind of like a wakeup call," Conrad Weiser co-coach Ann Schmidt said. "I thought we did a great job of coming right back after that goal and refocusing."

Pachuilo got the Scouts even by converting a penalty corner eight minutes later. The Scouts took the lead for good when Rachman hit a ball from just inside the goal line across the goal mouth and off the far post.

"It was totally unexpected," Rachman said. "I never would have guessed it would have happened. I just hit it as a cross ball and was hoping somebody would tip it in."

Rachman got a tip-in on a scramble six minutes into the second half to give the Scouts a 3-1 lead. Davies scored with 13:30 left and the Lions continued to pressure but were denied the equalizer.

District 3 runner-up Hamburg was locked in a scoreless struggle with District 4 runner-up Midd-West (17-6-1) until Rayell Heistand scored on a deflection with 3:51 left.

On a penalty corner, Heistand sent the ball into Caitlin Brown, who fired a shot that Heistand redirected past goalie Raven Schlief to give the Hawks their first state playoff win since 1999.

"It's so exciting," Heistand said. "The girls are great. We work as a team. When we play as a team we play really, really good."
